What does a Chief AI Officer do at a mid-size company?

Sets the rules for AI use, decides where AI goes first, manages risk and vendors, and reports results to the CEO and board. Without staff, one person carries all of it.

Is a Chief AI Officer required?

Not for private companies. US federal agencies must retain or designate one under OMB memo M-25-21 (April 2025), and may give the role to an existing official such as a CIO or CTO. This is general information, not legal advice.

Which AI governance frameworks are standard?

Most programs start from NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework 1.0 (January 2023) with its Generative AI Profile (NIST AI 600-1, July 2024), and ISO/IEC 42001:2023 for AI management systems. We teach how they fit together; certification decisions stay with you and your auditors.

Do we need an AI acceptable-use policy?

If your staff use AI tools, a written policy is the usual first step. At minimum it names approved tools, data that must never be entered, when a person reviews output, and who to ask. Have counsel review it before it goes out.

What should a new CAIO do in the first 90 days?

A common sequence: list the AI tools and agents already in use, publish a short use policy, score the first few use cases, and agree a monthly report with the CEO. We work through that sequence with you.

What does a Consult block cost?
